CMM Programmer / Operator & Quality Inspector

Aerospace & Defense Precision Manufacturing (AS9100)

Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Employment Type: Full-Time | On-site
Compensation: $70,000 – $100,000 annually (DOE)


Position Overview

Our confidential client is an engineering-driven precision machining manufacturer supporting aerospace and defense programs where quality is non-negotiable.

This role serves as the final authority on dimensional quality and product release. The CMM Programmer / Operator & Quality Inspector owns inspection strategy, execution, documentation, and conformance under a rigorously controlled AS9100 Quality Management System.

This is not a passive inspection role. It is a decision-making position that directly impacts mission-critical hardware.


Key Responsibilities

Inspection Programming & Execution

  • Program, set up, and operate CMM systems using Mitutoyo MCOSMOS and Wenzel Verisurf

  • Operate Keyence laser scanning systems for dimensional verification and profile analysis

  • Develop and optimize inspection strategies for complex machined components

Quality Verification

  • Perform First Article Inspections (AS9102), in-process inspections, and final inspections

  • Interpret and apply engineering drawings, GD&T, CAD models, and specifications

  • Select appropriate measurement methods to ensure accuracy and repeatability

  • Verify dimensional conformance and product integrity prior to release

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately record inspection results and maintain inspection records per AS9100 requirements

  • Mark prints and/or parts as required to document inspection status

  • Identify, document, and segregate nonconforming material in accordance with company procedures

  • Support root cause analysis and corrective action activities

Cross-Functional Communication

  • Communicate inspection results clearly with machining, engineering, and quality leadership

  • Provide actionable feedback to support continuous improvement

  • Act as a trusted technical voice within the quality function

Shop & Equipment Responsibilities

  • Safely operate overhead cranes to position large or complex parts for inspection

  • Maintain a clean, organized inspection area

  • Follow all company safety and handling procedures


Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a CMM Programmer / Operator and/or Quality Inspector in a machining environment

  • Hands-on experience with:

    • MCOSMOS

    • Verisurf

    • Keyence inspection and scanning systems

  • Strong proficiency in blueprint reading and GD&T

  • Solid computer skills for inspection software, reporting, and documentation

  • Strong math skills and attention to detail

  • Working knowledge of AS9100 and/or ISO 9001 inspection requirements

  • Clear, professional communication skills across all organizational levels

  • Safety-first mindset

  • U.S. Person status required for ITAR-regulated work


Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Frequent standing and walking in inspection and shop areas

  • Frequent seated work while programming and reporting

  • Frequent reaching, including overhead

  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs

  • Ability to work safely around large components, cranes, and precision inspection equipment


Safety Expectations

  • Follow all company and regulatory safety procedures

  • Identify and communicate potential safety risks

  • Lead by example in:

    • Safe inspection setups

    • Proper part handling

    • Safe crane operation
