DDC SERVICE TECHNICIAN

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced DDC Service Technician to support the installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and optimization of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct Digital Controls (DDC), PLC-based control systems, and industrial instrumentation throughout Southeast Michigan.

This position is ideal for a hands-on controls professional who enjoys diagnosing complex system issues, working directly with customers, and supporting a wide variety of commercial, industrial, municipal, institutional, and process control environments. The successful candidate will possess strong troubleshooting skills across HVAC controls, PLC systems, instrumentation, networking, and field devices.

Key Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, service, and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems.
• Diagnose and repair HVAC control systems, controllers, sensors, actuators, valves, VFDs, and field devices.
• Perform startup, commissioning, and point-to-point verification of new control systems.
• Troubleshoot PLC and SCADA-based control systems.
• Configure, calibrate, and commission instrumentation including:
  • Pressure transmitters
  • Level transmitters
  • Flow meters
  • Pressure switches
  • Level switches
  • Actuators
  • Pump control systems
• Analyze and resolve communication issues involving BACnet, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and other control networks.
• Modify and optimize control sequences to improve system performance and energy efficiency.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line drawings, control drawings, and wiring diagrams.
• Perform loop checks, system validation, and operational testing.
• Document service activities, control modifications, troubleshooting procedures, and corrective actions.
• Assist with control system upgrades, retrofits, and modernization projects.
• Provide technical support and training to facility personnel and end users.
• Maintain a professional customer-facing presence while representing the company in the field.
• Follow all company and customer safety policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience with DDC Controls, Building Automation Systems, Controls Engineering, Industrial Controls, or Automation Systems.
• Strong troubleshooting experience with HVAC control systems.
• Working knowledge of electrical systems and control circuitry.
• Experience reading electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.
• Understanding of:
  • Air Handling Units (AHUs)
  • Rooftop Units (RTUs)
  • Chillers
  • Boilers
  • VAV Systems
  • VFDs
  • Pumps
  • Industrial instrumentation
• Experience troubleshooting communication and networking issues within control systems.
• Strong documentation and reporting skills.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Niagara, Tridium, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Distech, Automated Logic, Trane, Delta Controls, or similar BAS platforms.
• Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs.
• Experience supporting SCADA systems.
• Instrumentation and process controls experience.
• Knowledge of:
  • BACnet
  • Modbus
  • Ethernet/IP
  • LonWorks
  • Industrial communications
• Associate degree in HVAC, Electrical Technology, Automation, Instrumentation, Controls, or related field.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
• Electrical apprenticeship or Journeyman experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand, walk, climb ladders, kneel, crouch, and work in mechanical spaces.
• Lift and carry equipment and materials up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in varying indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.
• Ability to safely access rooftops, mechanical rooms, industrial facilities, and customer sites.
