Position Overview
An established Michigan-based general contractor with a strong portfolio of complex construction projects is seeking a Project Engineer to support project management and field operations throughout the construction lifecycle.
This position works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, owners, engineers, and other project stakeholders to keep projects organized, documented, on schedule, safe, and moving toward successful completion.
The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of commercial, industrial, automotive, higher-education, or similar construction experience and understands the project-engineering fundamentals of RFIs, submittals, change orders, schedules, document control, subcontractor coordination, site logistics, and project closeout.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Project Managers and field leadership with day-to-day execution of assigned construction projects.
- Assist with owner questions, concerns, and project communications.
- Provide technical and administrative support for identifying, resolving, and tracking project issues.
- Manage project document control, ensuring drawings, specifications, revisions, correspondence, and other project records remain organized and current.
- Prepare, process, distribute, and track RFIs and submittals.
- Maintain and assist with updating project schedules.
- Support planning and coordination of site logistics and construction sequencing.
- Coordinate with subcontractors to resolve project issues and maintain progress.
- Facilitate project meetings and maintain accurate meeting minutes and action items.
- Support procurement activities by distributing bid documents and tracking subcontractor/vendor participation.
- Receive, review, and evaluate contractor quotations associated with project changes.
- Assist with preparation, tracking, and processing of change orders.
- Track weekly labor, installed quantities, and other project-production information.
- Support project cost and progress tracking.
- Assist with quality-control activities and validation of approved products and materials.
- Support project-site safety requirements and reinforce established company safety policies.
- Assist with inspections and the punch-list and project-closeout process.
- Coordinate documentation and communication between office and field personnel.
- Assist with plan-review and approval processes involving local and state municipalities.
- Maintain professional communication with owners, subcontractors, inspectors, consultants, and other project stakeholders.
- Travel to project sites as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related discipline OR equivalent relevant construction experience.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant professional construction experience.
- Working knowledge of construction drawings, specifications, project documentation, and construction processes.
- Experience with or strong understanding of RFIs, submittals, change orders, document control, and project schedules.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, engineers, and owners.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to track multiple open items and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to identify project issues, follow them through resolution, and maintain accurate documentation.
- Strong commitment to construction-site safety.
- Ability and willingness to travel as project requirements dictate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project experience within industrial, automotive, or higher-education construction environments.
- OSHA 30-Hour certification.
- Experience with Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, and/or Viewpoint.
- Experience supporting large commercial or industrial construction projects.
- Experience with subcontractor coordination and procurement.
- Exposure to labor and quantity tracking.
- Experience reviewing subcontractor quotations and supporting change-order management.
- Familiarity with municipal permitting, plan-review, and approval processes.
- Understanding of applicable construction codes, standards, and engineering practices.
Ideal Candidate
The strongest candidate will already understand how a general contractor manages a project and will have practical experience supporting a PM or Superintendent on active construction projects.
They should be able to confidently explain how they have personally handled RFIs, submittals, drawing/document control, subcontractor coordination, change orders, schedules, meeting documentation, field issues, and punch lists.
Candidates coming from industrial or automotive construction environments should be especially relevant, along with Project Engineers who have supported large commercial or institutional projects.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has developed a solid foundation as a Project Engineer, Field Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, or Construction Coordinator and is looking to continue progressing toward full project-management responsibility.

Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary: $70,000–$90,000, commensurate with experience.
