Maintenance Electrician

Job Title: Maintenance Electrician (Journeyman) – 2nd or 3rd Shift

Pay Rate: $38.25/hr
Shift Options: 2nd shift (2:00 PM–10:00 PM) or 3rd shift (10:00 PM–6:00 AM)
Location: Detroit

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Electrician performs journey-level electrical work including the design, installation, construction, modification, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment. This role also serves as a lead worker when needed and supports the broader maintenance team—meaning electricians may be asked to assist with mechanical maintenance tasks as part of a multi-craft environment.

What You’ll Do

• Inspect, isolate, troubleshoot, and repair electrical malfunctions using appropriate test instruments.

• Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical/electronic wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment using hand and power tools.

• Diagnose malfunctioning systems and components to identify root cause and restore safe operation.

• Troubleshoot and maintain electrical distribution systems, including motors and motor controls.

• Connect wiring to circuit breakers, transformers, and other components.

• Inspect electrical systems for hazards, defects, and code compliance; recommend adjustments or repairs.

• Advise management when continued operation may be unsafe or hazardous.

• Test continuity and electrical systems using devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes.

• Assist in developing specifications for repairs and new construction.

• Estimate time, materials, and cost for electrical projects.

• Maintain accurate service and repair documentation and update records as required.

• Research, purchase, and manage inventory for parts, supplies, and related maintenance items.

• Respond to both routine and emergency repair calls.

• Support and back up other maintenance employees; may train and direct other staff.

• May diagnose and replace select mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components as required in a multi-craft maintenance environment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role may require:

• Climbing ladders/step ladders; working at heights.

• Bending, kneeling, crawling, laying horizontally, walking, and standing for long periods.

• Working in tight/confined spaces when necessary.

• Working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather, and occasionally in high-temperature environments.

• Exposure to electricity, noise (hearing protection may be required), lubricants, cleaning solvents, batteries, and other industrial materials.

• Ability to lift and exert force: 50–100 lbs occasionally, 25–50 lbs frequently, 10–20 lbs constantly.

• Mandatory PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots (plus other PPE as required).

• Compliance with company policies and ethical/safe work practices at all times.

Required Qualifications

• Journeyman status is required (documentation must be provided):

  • Journeyman card, or certificate of completion of an apprenticeship program, or letter from an organization confirming completion and Journeyman status.

• Ability and willingness to work 2nd shift (2–10) or 3rd shift (10–6).

• Proven experience troubleshooting and repairing industrial electrical systems and equipment.

• Strong safety mindset and ability to identify hazards and work in compliance with applicable codes/standards.

• Comfortable operating in a hands-on, industrial environment and supporting general maintenance needs beyond electrical work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with PLC logic interpretation / basic troubleshooting (programming not required; understanding is a plus).
